CHP Senior Volunteer Program

The Auburn/Newcastle office of the CHP is looking for volunteers to perform various tasks in their office or in the field.  Office duties involve assisting the general support officers in their related duties, and assisting clerical staff with data entry and general office functions (no uniform required).  Field duties (SVP uniform required) include towing and deploying their radar trailer, being a liaison for the department with elementary schools, monitoring traffic in and around school zones. Volunteers will participate in ride-alongs with officers.  However, under no circumstances will volunteers be permitted to act in an enforcement capacity. Volunteers will be our eyes and ears, the officers will handle any effacement contacts.

Volunteers will receive "on the job training" and classroom training.  Training will include a departmental overview, defensive driving, basic trailer towing, the fundamentals of traffic radar, first aid, basic computer orientation and other functions.

Volunteers must be 50 years old, with no felony convictions, and be willing to work a minimum of 8 hours per month (minimum of 4 hour shifts).  Candidates must be able to work without supervision, be a member of AARP, and be willing to purchase their own SVP uniforms.

Qualified persons interested in participating in this program should contact Sgt. Ed Bertola or Officer Joe Edwards at (916) 663-3344.

Placer County Planning Department

Code Enforcement Division

11414 B Avenue, Auburn CA 95603

530-886-3050 or 800-488-4308 ext 3050

The Code Enforcement Division in the Planning Department investigates reports of county land use code violations. Code enforcement activities are primarily complaint-driven. Placer County relies on residents and visitors to make the county aware of potential violations.

Here are some examples of common code enforcement situations:

  • Excess open storage of materials or trash

  • Excess numbers of vehicles or abandoned vehicles

  • Excess numbers of animal enclosures (dogs, horses, cats, etc.)

  • Illegal second residences

  • Illegal signs

  • Using recreational vehicles as residences

  • Business activity in an area not zoned for that activity (e.g. auto repair in a residential area)

When Code Enforcement staff receives a written report of a code violation in the form of a letter; email or a complaint form. (letters or email should contain all the information requested on the complaint form) they will investigate the situation to be sure a violation exists. If no violation exists, they explain to the individual who complained why there is no violation. If there is a violation of county code, they take steps to have the violation corrected.

  • send letter or complaint form to Code Enforcement Div.,11414 B Avenue, Auburn CA 95603

  • send letter or form as an attachment to email to mharris@placer.CA.gov.

  • send letter or form by FAX to 530-652-1382

Despite their title, Code Enforcement staff doesn't handle questions about building codes, but refer them to the county's Building Department. Also, in some matters regarding public health (living conditions, septic system concerns), Code Enforcement may refer a matter to the Environmental Health Division, in Health and Human Services, for investigation.

If you have a question about a possible code violation, please contact Code Enforcement for further information by email or by phone, at 530-886-3050 or 800-488-4308 ext 3050.
